Over the Kelani River with My Mother

We lurched along to hospital

You and I, for the umpteenth time

Over the eternal heaving swell

Of the Kelani river

You, hanging dull-eyed onto

The remnants of your  existence

And I  holding you, lest you fell.

Now I lurch back with you

for the very last time

Over the swell of the Kelani river

Holding onto to you carefully,

A mound of ashes in a clay pot,

Heart pounding in disbelief,

The you I knew gone forever.
