Chitra began her involvement with the literary field after moving from the U.S. to Sri Lanka in 2003 to spend her retirement years. Her poems and short stories have appeared in Channels, The Sunday Times Magazine, Daily News Muse and other Sri Lankan publications.
After her husband Willem Stuiver died in 2009 Chitra began to spend more time on her writing specially after her poem ‘Ruminations of a Recent Widow’ won an honorable mention in the annual Channels Poetry and short story contest in 2010. She was invited to join the EWC in 2011.
A Visual Arts Librarian by profession Chitra worked in the Hawaiian State Library and The Contemporary (Art) Museum in Honolulu until she retired. She has a Masters Degree in Library Science and a second Masters Degree in Art History from the University of Hawaii.
Chitra is also a photographer. Her color photographs have been exhibited in Honolulu and later in Colombo.
A collection of her photographs ‘Art in Nature: Color Pattern Texture’ was published in 2013.
She is hoping to publish a selection of poems and accompanying photographs in the near future.
